Damaged Dollars are Redeemed

If you’ve damaged your cash – set it on fire, accidentally shredded it, or your dog ate your wallet – there’s good news. The Treasury Department has a Mutilated Currency Division accepts and analyzed damaged bills, and reimburses the sender. Treasury staff sift through approximately 24,000 cases a year, using such low-tech tools as scalpels, scissors, tape, glue, tweezers, UV lights, drying ovens, and cheesecloth.
