California became the first state in the U.S. to ban four harmful chemicals from food production. The move prohibits the use of red dye No. 3 and other artificial flavorings and preservatives that are suspected to cause an increased risk of cancer, harm to the reproductive system, and damage to the immune system. The law brings the U.S. slightly closer to a food environment like that of the EU, where the chemicals are banned.
