Never Stop Chiseling Your Statue

2/16/2022

Picture
Michelangelo never completed the sculpture that some think was meant to be his most personal work. It was of a marble Pietà, depicting Jesus with the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, and Nicodemus. Michelangelo worked on it for years, but the marble block was flawed and full of impurities. He became frustrated and abandoned the piece. But the sculpture survived and last year was restored and is displayed at the Opera del Duomo Museum in Florence.
“If you do not find yourself beautiful yet, act as the creator of a statue: he cuts away here, smooths there, until a lovely face appears. So do you also: cut away all that is excessive, straighten what is crooked, bring light to all that is overcast, and never cease chiseling your statue.” - Plotinus
Affirmative prayer: Infinite Presence, I give thanks that I am created in the image of pure Spirit and am commissioned to make my life a work of art. May I display love, kindness, and compassion in the avenues of my being. Thank you, God, forever, Amen.
