![]() Trees are "social creatures" that communicate with each other in cooperative ways, says forestry ecologist Suzanne Simard. They are linked by an underground network of fungi that resembles the neural networks in the brain. In one study, a Douglas fir that had been injured by insects appeared to send chemical warning signals to a ponderosa pine, which then produced defense enzymes to protect itself. “Each faith tradition offers an image of a sacred web into which we are woven. We are the glittering jewels at each intersection of the net, reflecting all the other jewels.
