On this day in 1955, Rosa Parks refused to move to the back of a city bus. The act of defiance elevated this Montgomery, Alabama, seamstress into a pivotal symbol in America’s civil rights movement. She was honored by the U.S. Congress as "the first lady of civil rights" and "the mother of the freedom movement."
