the works of our hands

J.S. Bach inscribed the words, Soli Deo Gloria – “Only to the glory of God” – at the end of his compositions. He offered his work as a form of worship, declaring that in all music – indeed, in all of life – there “should be no other aim than the glory of God and the restoration of the soul.”
“Here lies John Smith, who for forty years cobbled shoes to the glory of God.” – epitaph found on a tombstone in London
Affirmative prayer: I am a beneficial presence. My work – be it for livelihood, a cause, or a personal project – is for the good of those around me. Because we are all connected in the One Life, the whole world is made better by my work and by the labor of my sisters and brothers. The works of our hands is indeed love made visible. Thank you, God, forever. Amen.
