In 1849, revolutionary Fyodor Dostoyevsky was imprisoned in St. Petersburg, standing in front of a firing squad. At the last instant, his execution was stayed, and a sentence of hard labor imposed. Back in his cell, Dostoyevsky was overcome with joy. "Life is a gift. Never has there seethed in me such an abundant and healthy kind of spiritual life. I am born again in new form. Every minute is an eternity of happiness.”
